What are the goals of these funds?
The South Dakota Retailers Association:
- Promotes and strives for improved government operation
- Protects, preserves, and encourages private enterprise
- Encourages qualified candidates to seek public office
- Receives contributions and provides direct financial contributions to candidates and ballot questions that are in general agreement with the objectives and purposes of the South Dakota Retailers Association
Why does SDRA get involved with legislative and congressional elections?
It is vital – for business owners and consumers alike – to elect people to the Legislature and Congress who make decisions that allow businesses to do what they do best: stimulate economic growth and prosperity in communities throughout South Dakota.
Allowing businesses to operate in an efficient and cost effective manner – without undue and burdensome laws and regulations – benefits all, including consumers.

How is the money used, and who decides which candidates or questions to support
Funds support legislative advocacy efforts on behalf of business through campaign contributions and engagement on ballot measures. Contributions are made on a non-partisan basis. Support is determined by a committee of member-business owners based on a number of criteria, including input from members and a candidate’s engagement on business-related issues.
How can I contribute?
SDRA welcomes contributions! Our Political Action Committee and Ballot Question Committee can accept personal or business checks, credit cards, or cash. (South Dakota state law allows corporations to contribute up to $10,000 to South Dakota PACs). Please note that state law requires our records to show the home address for individual contributors.
