The South Dakota Retailers Associaton legislative team tracks hundreds of legislative proposals and regulatory measures every year, and lobbies the Legislature and regulatory agencies on many of the issues.
To assist with that important work, the SDRA Board of Directors has established standing positions on dozens of issues.
In some cases, issues are more complex and nuanced, and the Association’s stand may vary depending on the specific language contained in the bill or regulation. In those instances, the Board of Directors has authorized the Association’s Legislative Committee to review proposals as they arise, and to determine the Association’s position on a case by case basis.
Each January, SDRA holds a Legislative Briefing in conjunction with our Annual Meeting. During the Briefing, our staff explains the new issues which are expected to surface during that year’s Legislative Session, and provides an overview of standing policies. The Association membership is invited to attend the Briefing, and is encouraged to ask questions and provide input. The Board then votes on each new issue, and makes changes as needed to standing positions.
In addition to the annual review of legislative policies, the Board examines new proposals at other regular board meetings throughout the year as needed.
